1. Who we are
FindIrish (findirish.ie), Dublin Road, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland, is the data controller for the personal data described in this policy. Contact: info@findirish.ie or our contact form.
We process personal data in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018 and the ePrivacy Regulations 2011 (S.I. 336/2011).
2. What data we hold and where it comes from
2.1 Business listing data
- Companies Registration Office (CRO) Open Data — company name, number, status, type, registration date, registered address and Eircode, published by the CRO under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. This is public register data; where a company or business name is that of an individual (for example a sole trader's registered business name), it may constitute personal data.
- Business owners — details added when a business is claimed or added: contact name, phone, email, website, opening hours, services, prices, photos and register numbers (for example RGI or Safe Electric).
- Derived data — map coordinates obtained by geocoding the business address, distances, and statistics such as years trading.
Legal basis: legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR) in operating a public directory of businesses trading in Ireland, which the public and the businesses themselves benefit from; and contract (Article 6(1)(b)) for data supplied by an owner who claims a listing. Anyone whose personal data appears in a listing may object or ask for removal at any time — see section 7 and our Listing & removal policy.
2.2 Visitors
- Location — if you tap "Use my location", your browser shares your coordinates with the page to calculate distances. This is processed in your browser only and is not stored by us.
- Technical data — IP address, browser type, pages visited and referring site, collected through server logs and, with your consent, analytics cookies (see our Cookie policy).
- Quote requests — name, phone, email, area and job description, which we pass to the business you selected so it can reply to you. We keep a copy to measure response times and to handle disputes.
- Reviews — your name (as you choose to show it), rating and review text, linked to the quote request it relates to.
- Contact form — name, email and message, used only to reply to you.
Legal bases: consent for non-essential cookies and location; performance of a contract or steps at your request for quote requests, reviews and contact messages; legitimate interests in site security, fraud prevention and service improvement.
2.3 Business owner accounts
Name, email, phone, password (hashed), the businesses you manage, subscription and payment status. Card details are handled by our payment processor and never stored on our servers. Legal basis: contract.
3. How we use data
- To publish and rank business listings and calculate distances
- To send quote requests to businesses and show measured response times
- To publish genuine reviews linked to real quote requests
- To provide owner accounts, statistics and premium services
- To reply to enquiries and handle correction and removal requests
- To keep the site secure and to understand how it is used
- To show advertising (see section 5)
4. Who we share data with
- Businesses you contact — receive the details in your quote request.
- Hosting — Hostinger International Ltd (servers in the EU).
- Maps — map tiles are loaded from OpenStreetMap or Google Maps; your IP address is sent to the map provider when a map loads.
- Google — Google AdSense and Google Analytics, only where you consent to advertising or analytics cookies. Google may use cookies and identifiers to serve personalised ads; see how Google uses data from partner sites and manage ad settings at adssettings.google.com.
- Email and payment providers — to send transactional email and process subscriptions.
- Authorities — where required by law.
We do not sell personal data. Where a provider processes data outside the European Economic Area, we rely on European Commission adequacy decisions or Standard Contractual Clauses.
5. Advertising
FindIrish is free to use and is partly funded by advertising on guide and article pages. Advertising cookies are only set with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time from the cookie settings link in the footer. You can opt out of personalised advertising from Google and other vendors at youronlinechoices.eu.
6. How long we keep data
- Business listings — while the business is trading or until removal is requested; CRO-derived records are refreshed from the register and removed when a company is dissolved.
- Quote requests — 24 months, then anonymised for statistics.
- Reviews — while the listing exists, unless removed under our review rules.
- Contact messages — 12 months.
- Owner accounts — while the account is open and for 6 years afterwards where required for tax and accounting law.
- Server logs — 90 days.
7. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to access your personal data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. Sole traders and other individuals named in a listing can ask us to correct or remove that listing using the Listing & removal policy; we act on such requests within 7 working days and in any case within one month.
To exercise any right, email info@findirish.ie or use the contact form (choose "Privacy / data request"). We may ask you to confirm your identity.
If you are unhappy with how we handle your data you can complain to the Data Protection Commission, 6 Pembroke Row, Dublin 2, D02 X963 — dataprotection.ie.
8. Security
The site is served over HTTPS. Passwords are stored hashed. Access to personal data is limited to staff who need it. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable technical and organisational measures appropriate to the risk.
9. Children
FindIrish is not directed at children under 16 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
10. Changes
We will post any changes to this policy on this page and update the date at the top. Significant changes will be highlighted on the site.
